Apoxyomenos (found 1849, in Vicolo dell'Atleta, Trastevere)

Speranza

In the centre of the Cabinet of tehe Apoxymenos stands a Roman copy of an original bronze of the Apoxymomenos -- the Cleanser -- by Lisippo, famous in the 4th century B. C.

The difficult name (from the Greek word meaning  'to wipe off') identifies a victorious athlete who is seen wiping oil from his skin with a scraper, or strigil (now lost), after a wrestling match.

One of the first statues to be made for 3-dimensional viewing, the Apoxyomenos was found in 1849 in Vicolo dell'Atleta (Athlete's Alley) in naerby Trastevere.
