MARIA MADDALENA, Bernini, Chigi, Siena

Speranza

Maria Maddalena shows contrition and remorse. Burdened by her sins, her body is twisted with agony. Her left leg is groping, dragged along on the ground, but the right foot rests firmly on the jar of ointment (her customary attribute) with which she had annointed the Saviour.

Maddalena's head rests, exhausted, on her fervently clasped hands.

Her face mirrors the despair of her soul, but her eyes turn towards heaven hopeful of salvation, and her mouth, too, seems to quiver between a moan and a sigh of relif.

Similar suspense is manifest in the sweep and counter-sweep of two ropes of tightly twisted folds which cut right across her body.
