Paulus Diaconus -- dal "Dizionario di letteratura erotica" (Wedeck)

Speranza

Paulus Diaconus.
--- A Lombard who flourished in Italy during the eighth century.
Originally named Paul Warnefried, he is the author of a number of historical works, his greatest achivement being his "History of the Lombards".
In his "Historia Romana", a continnuation of the Roman historian Eutropius, Paulus Diaconus discusses Roman imperial regulations. Of the reign of the Emperor Theodosius, he writes:

"Again he repealed another decree of this kind."

"If any woman was caught in adultery, she was not in this way reformed, but rather given over to an increase in her lewdness."

"They used to shut her up in a narrow chamber, and admitting men to fornicate with her, at the moment of their intercourse, they rang bells, to proclaim publicly the woman's shame."

"Hearing this, the Emperor permitted it no longer, but ordered the rooms to be torn down."
