POGGIO (1380-1459).
--- Gian Francesco Poggio Bracciolini.
Commonly known as Poggio.
An Italian scholar and humanist, he later became Chancellor of France.
Passionately interested in antiquity, he explored libraries, searched fro classical manuscripts, had copies made, and was also a historian, panegyrist, and translator.
Author of a rather rare piece on "Beards: their use and significance."
Chiefly known, however, for his "Facetiae", consisting of more than 300 satirical items.
These are salacious anecdotes, witty, touched with a sardonic, sophisticated humour, and dwelling largely on amatory practices.
