Clement of Alexandria, "Protrepticus"
Prosymnus promised Bacco to tell him how to go to "Hell". The requested pay was Bacco himself. On Bacco's return from Hell, Prosymnus had died.
To pay his sacred debt to his lover, Bacco goes to Prosymnus's tomb and undergoes intercourse.
Bacco cuts the branch of a fig tree, carved it, and sat on it -- thus fulfilling the promise of Prosymnus.
In various cities, phalli are dedicated to Bacco as a mystic memorial of this event.
