Ghiberti, Sacrificio d'Isacco -- Gates of Paradise, Florence

Speranza

photo

The "Gates of Paradise", as Michelangelo called the second set of bronze doors made by Ghiberti to the baptistery of Florence, are not like the first pair.

Halfway betweeen sculpture and painting, they combine with great skill the qualities of the two media.

Ghiberti took up once more the theme of Abraham's sacrifice.

This is time it is less dramatic and is imbued with a supreme grace.

Ghiberti set the episode in the middle of a finely modelled countryside, inspired by the harmonious Tuscan scenery that surrounded him.
