Goodspeed's Opera house was built in 1877 by shipping magnate and avid theatre lover William H. Goodspeed.
The architect was Jabez Comstock.
The opera house opened on October 24, 1877, with "Charles II" and the farces "Box and Cox" and "Turn Him Out".
Featured performers of the day were brought to East Haddam by steamboat, many directly from theatres in New York.
