Ghiberti, Sacrificio d'Isacco, 1401, Bargello, Firenze

Speranza

A competition piece that won for the victorious young goldsmith Ghiberti the commission to make the bronze doors of the baptistery at Florence, "Il sacrificio d'Isacco", was executed in high relief in a supple style and with a very skillful mastery of technique.

The naked body of the young Isacco is classical in inspiration, while Abraham's robe still has Gothic folds.

The composition is arranged in three levels with perfect clarity.
