Il Tempietto di Bramante (San Pietro in Montorio, Roma)

Speranza

The Tempietto was built between 1502 and 1510 and is based on the design of a small Roman circular temple.

If Alberti represents the early phase of the Renaissance with its free interpretation of classical antiquity, Bramante initiates a stricter rule.

This little building -- it measures only 15 feet in interior diametre -- has the grandeur of simplicity and complete unity.

The Doric peristyle, the drum pierced by alternating windows and shell-headed niches and the surmounting dome with its little ball-topped lantern are in striking contrast to the luxuriant detail and multiplicity of motifs introduced into Renaissance compositions.

The Tempietto almost fills the courtyard of the church and friary built on the spot where, according to tradition, St. Peter was crucified.
