Oloferne, -- Donatello -- Signoria, Firenze

Speranza

"A warning to tyrants and a symbol of liberty" is the inscription on the base of this bronze, "Judith and Holophernes".

It originally stood in the Medici palace.

When Piero the Unlucky left Florence to Savonarola in 1595, the people exhibited the bronze on the Piazza della Signoria, to let future tyrants know what punishment awaited them.

This work, of which Donatello was so proud that he signed it, was once a fountain with water pouring out of the four corners of the cushion.

Traces of gilding can still be seen.

Donatello constructed it so that it can be seen to advantage from all sides.
