Pantalone, Teatro di Verzura, Villa Marlia

Speranza

The Villa Marlia was built by the family of Orsetti in about 1651.

The "Teatro di Verzura", the most fascinating feature of the garden, was planted some fifty years later.

Cut from hedges of clipped yew, it is said to have been designed by Juvarra.

Auditorium, wings, conductor's platform, prompter's box, and even candle-shades are all shaped from the living green.

The stage is a close-shaven lawn and stone figures from the commedia dell'arte are half emerging from arched niches as if to being one of those impromptu scenes of fantasy for which they were famous.
