Particolare della "Tempesta" di Giorgione

Speranza

This small painting, the true significance of which has never been made cledar, shows on one side a woman feeding a child against a background of deep, warm tones, through the middle of which runs a clear river with houses and ruins on its banks.

On the opposite side, an elegantly dressed young man is standing.

He is dreaming or waiting, and does not seem to see the woman.

It is one of the rare paintings whose attribution to Giorgione has never been contested.

Ath the very outset of the Cinquecento, Giorgione introduced into painting an entirely new poetry and luminosity that captivated all his contemporaries, and once and for all gave the Venetian school its reputatiaon for exquisite colour.
