Ponte Sant'Angelo, Roma

Speranza

Ten lively guardian angels by Bernini and his pupils look down on the ancient bridge of Sant'Angelo. This bridge was built in the 2nd century by the Emperor Hadrian, to give access to his mauseoleum, and its three central arches have remained intact.

In contrast to the majority of Bernini's sculptures, these were conceived in such a way that they could be seen by people crossing the bridge from several different angles instead of from the front alone.
