Santa Maria del Giglio, Zobenigo, Venezia

Speranza

With its strong chiaroscuro effects, rich reliefs, agitated sculpture and great broken pediment, the facciata of S. Maria Zobenigo, Venezia, is one of the most magnificent examples of Baroque scenic art in Venezia.

It was built by Giuseppe Sardi in 1680-83.

This was the family church of the Barbaro doges, and the sculptured reliefs commemorate the explots of Giosafatte Barbaro who made a great voyage of discovery towards the end of the 15th century, pasisng through Muscovy and Armenia, to the shores of the Caspian Sea.
