Statua, Giardino, Villa Garzoni, Collodi

Speranza

The site of this romantic garden is a precipitous cliff shaded by firs and ilex, and in the spectacular use the designer has made of its natural surroundings it is reminiscent of the Villa d'Este.

The whole composition centres on a great staircase moving up in double zigzags to a terrace, then shooting still higher to terminate in a figure of Fame, with fluttering draperies, blowing a trumpet.

The background of dark trees behind her gradually merges with the surrounding landscapes of wooded hills.

The pagan figure of a women with goat feet and horns, instantly reminiscent of the rock-carved goat woman at Soriano, sits on a console on the first terrace overlooking a vast panorama.

The layout of the garden was begun in 1652 by the Garzoni family who had purchased Collodi Castle from the Republic of Lucca.
