Villa Farnese, Caprarola

Speranza

The great terminal figures bearing urns and baskets of grapes upon their heads, standing on the highest terraces of the garden alone gainst the bosky, ravie-scarred landscape or in pairs mysteriously conversing, are the guardians of the Villa Farnese.

They are the most impressive of the graden staudes and the most pagan.

With their goat-like locks and mocking faun faces the male terms make the kind of punning reference, typical of humanist thought, to the name of the village, and Etruscan place after which the villa too is called.
