The literature on Ary Scheffer in English is scant, but L. J. I Ewals’s encyclopedia entry is useful.

Since the recent rediscovery of the "Napoleon" painting, only a brief study of it has appeared—the article by Karen Serres—but it is excellent.

Petra ten-Doesschate Chu’s survey of the period in France on the painting is excellent.
