"The Brutus Hamilton later offered in a second version to Lord Shelburne in
1779.
Hamilton explained in a letter that the Hopetoun Bruto had "gained me some
credit," but he thinks that the new work "is one of my best productions in
painting.'"
"It was this Brutus -- the Lord Shelburne Bruto -- that Canova saw in Hamilton's studio in
1780, and wrote in his diary that it was "cosi ben inventato e di bel
carattere secondo l'uso antico, il colorito poi non mi pare tanto
eccellente.""
