Could Fred Astaire make it on his own following Adele's retirement after THE BAND WAGON?

He did moderately well in GAY DIVORCE, which was kept alive by the popularity of "NIGHT AND DAY".

The 1934 movie version, Gay Divorcee, which threw out Porter's entire score -- except Night and Day -- teamed Astaire with Ginger Rogers, and taht was the end of Astaire and Broadway.

Hollywood also cut the score for the 1931 version of FIFTY MLLION FRENCHMEN CAN'T BE WRONG and the 1937 ROSALIE -- for which Porter wrote the replacement.

Librettist Taylor, later to collaborate with Porter on OUT OF THIS WORLD, was Manners' stepson and son of actress Laurette.
