Porteriana: "ANYTHING GOES"

Speranza

Anything goes
I get a kick out of you
You're the top

Unquestionable Porter's second best show (after KISS ME, KATE).

Freedley, heretofore associated with the Gershwins, was just recovering from his insolvency. Gaxton and Moore had worked togehter. Now they established themselves as an ongoing partnership.

Ethel Merman, discovered in the final Aarons and Freedley hit, GIRL CRAZY, took Broadway by storm with her renditions of several sparkling Porter gems.

ANYTHING GOES played the Alvin, the hosue that Aarons, Freedley, and the Gershwins' hits built -- except Freedley had to rent it, having lost ownership.

The Bolton-Wodehouse libretto about the comic aftermath of a shipwreck was hastily discarded when the MORRO CASTLE sank off the New Jersey coast (with 134 dead).

The authors being unavailable for revisions, it fell to director Lindsay to fashion a new book around the existing songs.
