Grice e Damone: all'isola -- Roma – filosofia italiana – Luigi Speranza
(Siracusa). Filosofo italiano. Damone was a Pythagorean. According to Giamblico
di Calcide, when Dionisio di Siracusa condemns Damon’s friend Fintia di
Siracusa to death, Fintia asked for time to arrange his affairs, saying Damone
would stand hostage for him while he is away. Dionisio is amazed when Damone
agrees to the arrangement, and even more amazed when Fintia duly returned at
the end of the day to accept his punishment. Dionisio was impressed and asked
to join their sect – but they turned him down.
