Achille, Napoli

Speranza

"Chiron instructing Achilles", formerly in the Basilica, Herculaneum.

Only partially excavated as yet, the Basilica in Herculaneum, near the Forum, is decorated on the concave surfaces of niches giving on to the interior of the great hall with paintings illustrating episodes from classical mythology.

This one is now in the Museo Nazionale, in Napoli.

They were the work of a painter of the early Flavian period whose aim was solidity and realistic modelling.
