Bernini, Teresa, Chiesa Santa Maria della Vittoria, Roma

Speranza

Epitomising the apogee of Baroque art, Bernini's Teresa is an essentially spectacular work.

It is like a living tableau, cleverly lit by a hidden window, the light of which is continued and emphasised by a fan of golden rays.

Teresa is lying on a cloud which looks as though it is miraculously suspended in the middle of a little stage which, opening out above the alter of the chapel, is one of Bernini's most unusual creations.

The sides of the altar are lit up and terminate in an arch decorated with paintings and stucco, which heightens the illusion.

Bernini, a sincere believer, illustrated here Teresa's account of her mystical experience.

Her uplifted face reflects the suffering AND JOY she felt when the angel peirced her heart with the arrow of divine love.

In the grouping for angel and Teresa, there is"nothing stable and tangible, all is movement or change".

Sculpture lost its essential qualities and took on a pictorial character.

It was intended to be seen from only one angle.

The extravagant folds of Teresa's robes destroy any effect of continuity.

Everything isn this work is in direct contradiction to the classical spirit.
