Giuseppe Valadier reacted against Baroque excesses with a fountain, shaped like a shell with perfectly regular arimbs.

Valadier's fountain was part of the reconstructgion work on the Piazza del Popolo, to which Valadier gave its final unity by building an immense stone semicricle of steps leading up to the Pincio Park. The architect thus put the finishing touches, in the neo-classical style, to the great works of urban planning sarted in the 17th century by papal initiative.
