Reni, "Sansone" 1610, Bologna

Speranza

The most brilliant student of the first Academy of Fine Arets, founded in Bologna by Carracci, was Guido Reni.

The theory of the school was based on imitation of the great masters of the Renaissance.

Its members strove to take the essential qualities of each master and combine them to achieve perfection.

"Sansone" is first and foremost a nude study, amost excessively graceful, in which we can see the distant influence of classical statuary.

In his pose, the Sansone reminds us of Raphael's frescoes in the Villa Farnese, and classifies Guido Reni as one of the "luminous" painters.
