In "Hercules and Nessus", the human figures are in the foreground plane, to allow for the realistic portrayal of the vast expanse of river landscape with its rippling water, flowing among the hills and creeks to shimmering distances.

The athletic form of Hercules, aiming his bow at the centaur Nesso who carries off his wife Dejaneira is of such strength and anatomical truth, that his swelling chest, the shaded hollow of his back, his taut sinews and strained muscles convey, as much as his bow, the tension of his physical effort.
