Portrait of a Young Man, by Biagio di Antonio, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Speranza

This portrait was painted in 1480.

It shows the various influences that affected Biagio's style around this time.

The composition harks back to earlier portraits by Florentine painters.

The modelling, however, resembles the works of Verrocchio.

In the quality of the drawing, indeed, and in the peculiar character of the landscape background, this portrait is one of a group by Bagio that show very clearly how much he was impressed by Verrocchio.

It is part of The Michael Friedsam Collection, bequest of Michael Friedman, in 1931.
