In this painting, Cosimo is not wearing the badge of the order of the Golden Fleece (which was conferred upon him in 1546), it is probably derived from Bronzino's portrait of Cosimo of 1545.

It belonged to Charles Bruen Berkins's collection, in Boston, and was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1908.
