Sebastiano Ricci, "Baccanale in onore di Pane", Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venezia

Speranza

This painting, previously in the Detsy collection, passed over to the Voss collection of Wiesbaden, and then to the Barsanti's in Rome.

It was later exported to Germany, where it was recovered by Rodolfo Siviero in 1954.

Studied in numerous drawings kept in the royal collections of Windsor and the Accademia Galleries, the piece dates from 1716, after Ricci's brief stay in Paris while returning from London.

The circular movement visible in this painting conveyes the drunkenness of teh bacchanal in honour of Pan, the deity with the horns and the goat's hooves, lover of dance, music, and wine.
