Francesco Salviati, "Portait of a Gentleman", Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Speranza'

This painting is a minor but interesting example of Salviati's mature work.

Its composition, along with the subject's stylised hands and their pose, shows the influence of the schools of Parma and Firenze.

The costume of the gentleman and the drawing, which is less incisive than in Salviati's early paintings, together suggest a date in the early 1540s.

This was a bequest of Helen Hay Whitney in 1944.
