Francesco Salviati, "Portrait of a Gentleman", Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Speranza

This portrait, one of Salviati's richest and most finished, is in his style of about 1540.

Costumes like this and beards cut in this way were fashionable about that time in Mantova, and Salivait may have painted it when he was there in 1541.

it was probably he who originated the curtain and border ornament.

This was a gift of Mr. Nate B. Spingold in 1955.
