Antonio Canova submitted this sculpture on March 30, 1779, to apply for membership of the Accademia.

He was unanimously accepted on April 5, 1779.

With this sculpture, Canova demonstrates that in spite of his 18th century education, he was also quite familiar with the work of Bernini.

Many of Bernini's models were in the Farsetti collection, which Canova frequented assidiously.
