Speranza
Four performances at Her Majesty's Theatre (22, 24, 29 July and 10 August 1847 -- the first two conducted by Verdi himself, the second two by Balfe), "I masnadieri" fell into oblivion in England -- but it was frequently performed in Italy.
The source is the quintessential "Sturm und Drang" -- Schiller's homonymous tragedy, itself based on "Giulio di Taranto".
The type of opera that Gilbert (as in "Pirates of Penzance") would parody.
