Patrick Fyffe, half of the comedy duo Hinge and Bracket, died from cancer at the age of 60.
The female impersonator played "Dame Hilda Bracket" to George Logan's "Dr Evadne Hinge" in the long-running double act.
Fyffe was taken ill just before Christmas while rehearsing a pantomime.
Doctors diagnosed cancer of the lower spine and he was given round-the-clock care in hospital.
Fyffe had appeared to be on the mend but a fortnight ago his condition worsened.
He died on Saturday at home in Wellington, Somerset.

Logan said:
Fyffe was one of the finest people I ever knew, a great natural comedian.
He was a totally original wit, great at off-the-cuff humour and anecdotes.
He was a joy to accompany and working with him was a pleasure.
----
The pair found fame as the opera-loving ladies in 1974 after appearing at The Edinburgh Festival.
The tall, thin musician Dr Hinge with her half-moon glasses and the outspoken singer Dame Hilda quickly won many fans.
Millions watched their BBC2 show "Dear Ladies", and they enjoyed success on radio and in national tours.
Hinge and Bracket split up in 1990 but reformed three years later for a reunion tour.
They also starred in the play Lettice and Lovage.
They appeared in the Queen Mother's 100th birthday pageant.
Fyffe commanded affection and laughter among young and old.
His humour was *without malice*.
He will be remembered with great fondness by millions of BBC viewers and listeners.
He is only survived by a sister.
He was a very private man.
