This chapter talks about the ‘Conflict of the Faculties’, which has been a byword for academic culture since the publication of Immanuel Kant's work of the same name in 1798. On closer inspection, the hierarchy of the four faculties of theology, law, medicine, and philosophy has been wrongly thought to be relatively static and the history of the numerous upgradings, downgradings, and re-evaluations within the hierarchy, has not yet been written. This chapter further emphasizes that from the medieval roots of the university until the end of pre-classical period, academic cultures were marked by the existence of the classical four-faculty scheme, a hierarchy which never went unchallenged.
