AMAFINIUS, CAIUS (second / first century BC)
Amafinius was an Epicurean. He was criticised by Cicero for his poor understanding of Epicurean teachings, his inadequate literary style, and for devoting his attention to relatively uneducated people. At least in part this was because Amafinius chose to teach and write about the philosophy of Epicurus in Latin, enabling him to reach a wider but often less sophisticated audience.
The extent to which he genuinely misrepresented Epicureanism is impossible to tell as no texts survive, but he does seem to have helped to make the ideas of the school better known and appreciated.
